Residents using private wells who live near the molybdenum testing areas of Caledonia, Raymond and Norway should consider annually testing for the potentially hazardous metal, the Department of Natural Resources announced this week.

Molybdenum occurs naturally in the Earth’s crust and some foods. It is necessary for a healthy diet but can be harmful in high doses.

“We are receiving some samples from individuals outside of the test area that indicate elevated levels of molybdenum,” Eric Nitschke, southeast regional director for the DNR, stated in a press release issued by the department. “We encourage people to consider testing for molybdenum and sharing the results with us to help understand where molybdenum occurs in southeast Wisconsin.”

Testing for molybdenum can cost between $13 and $45, according to the DNR.

In addition to areas in Racine County, the department has also asked residents with private wells that live in Franklin and Oak Creek to test their well water as well.

The DNR, local officials and well owners first learned about elevated levels of molybdenum in a handful of private wells in the Caledonia area in August 2009, the release states.

In addition to being found in private wells, traces of the metal have also surfaced in the water supplies of some schools.

Elevated levels were found in Raymond Elementary School’s water supply in January. Elevated levels were also found at North Cape Elementary School, 11926 Highway K, in February and at Yorkville Elementary School, 18621 Washington Ave., in March, according to officials from each school.

All three schools are bringing in water for students while trying to come up with long-term solutions with the help of the state.
