Watch Case:Powder Metallurgy/PM Case Studies
The PM Process has a high degree of flexibility allowing the tailoring of the physical characteristics of a product to suit your specific property and performance requirements. Whether it is by controlling porosity to develop the unique capability of self-lubrication or by optimising the chemistry to provide improved longevity in wear parts, PM has a solution.
The case studies shown in the database are examples of the wide range of PM products, materials and applications that are in current production. Each and every day a new PM part helps a company in reducing cost and opening up new market opportunities.
Finished Weight of Component : Density (g/cm3) : 5.8 g/cm3 and this increases to 7.95 g/cm3 after sintering Tensile Strenght (N/mm2) : Yield Strength (=0.2% N/mm2) : Hardness : Treatment : Description: ETA turned to metal injection moulding for its range of SWATCH-IRONY watch cases because of cost savings compared with hot forming.
Composition: The cases, which follow the same basic design as the plastic SWATCH, are made in 316L stainless steel using a BASF moulding binder. Tolerances are generally ±0.05 mm, but must be maintained at ±0.025mm for the case holes. The cases are polished to provide a mirror finish.
ETA paid particular attention to health and safety issues, such as nickel allergy through release of nickel, when selecting the stainless steel material for the watch case.
