Sagentia has created a new surgical lighting platform
Cambridge-based Sagentia has just won the LED Lighting Application category at the Elektra 09 European Electronics Industry Awards for demonstrating how a Light Emitting Diode technology can be used to improve efficiency, cost and usage in a lighting application.
Sagentia’s winning entry was for its breakthrough work using recent advances in high definition LED technology to create a new surgical lighting platform.
Conventional lights required complex filters to manage the heat produced, were expensive to maintain and produced light which could not be controlled.
Sagentia’s solution, known as HD-LED, delivers excellent light quality and is also fully adjustable. Also, because the lights use solid-state technology they generate virtually no heat, producing only visible light (therefore no UV or infrared) and the sealed units are easy to clean and maintain, with no bulbs to replace.
Efficiency is also exceptional with HD-LED lights using up to 70 per cent less energy than conventional medical lighting using tungsten halogen bulbs.
Sales of products that incorporate the technology have risen by 60 per cent since launch.
The energy efficiency offered by HD-LED is further strengthening the company’s reputation, as potential buyers consider not only their lighting requirements but also their energy bills and carbon footprint.
The lighting range has consistently exceeded the standards laid down in environmental legislation, significantly contributing towards a low carbon environment by offering an estimated CO2 reduction of 1.25 tonnes per year per operating theatre.

Other application areas for the technology are currently being explored by Sagentia and include high colour quality, efficient, natural lighting for retail display, film, museums and architectural illumination.
