UK Open-Roland Scholten exits while Phil Taylor and James Wade progress

The 2004 champion Scholten exited the tournament, which is known as 'The FA Cup of Darts' in the first round.

The Dutchman was beaten 5-4 by Conan Whitehead, one of the 32 Speedy Amateur Qualifiers, in a dramatic clash.

With the game tied at 4-4, the 27-year-old bricklayer from Gillingham Whitehead hit double 10 to record the biggest win of his career before going on to reach the third round on Friday.

Meanwhile, 16-time world champion Phil Taylor, who was 44th in the list of qualifiers, started his campaign in round two against Kevin Dowling.

The Stoke thrower averaged an impressive 101.86 in a 5-1 victory and was never troubled against the man known as 'The Bounty Hunter'.

Dean Winstanley fell at the first hurdle against the unknown Dave Weston, who won the contest with an impressive 112 outshot.

Two-time UK Open champion James Wade defeated Liverpool's Robbie Green, Matt Gallon and Wayne Jones to go into the hat.

Meanwhile, 2007 runner-up Vincent van der Voort went out to 2008 world championship finalist Kirk Shepherd 5-3, while Justin Pipe lost 5-2 to Gareth Pass.

It proved to be a bad night for the Dutch as Co Stompe also made an early exit, losing 5-4 to Michael Mansell, although 'The Matador' Jelle Klaasen fought back from 4-2 down to beat Gareth Pass.

The current World Masters champion Stephen Bunting, Andy Smith and Ted Hankey all made it through.
