Platinum Production Down on Strike at Bafokeng Rasimone Mine

Unionized miners at the Bafokeng Rasimone facility stopped working Monday in a wage dispute with their employer, JIC Mining Services, which supplies contract mining labor for Royal Bafokeng Platinum.

A Royal Bafokeng Platinum spokesman said production lost over the first four days of the strike has cost the company about 2,240 ounces of platinum group metals, which include platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold.

"The industrial action, if prolonged, will impact on production for the duration of the strike, more specifically at (the mine's) South Shaft," Royal Bafokeng Platinum said in a statement.

"Shareholders will be updated as developments occur or when the industrial action terminates and normal operating conditions resume," the company statement said.
