New Medical X-ray Protection Material: W-Ni-Cu Alloy

As a new medical X-ray protection material, W-Ni-Cu alloy (tungsten-based alloy), is lead-free, environmentally-friendly and non-magnetic, and has high density (~18.8g/cm3), strong ability to absorb high-energy rays. Also, it is machinable and weldable. Besides, it has properties of high hardness, high strength and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Therefore, W-Ni-Cu alloy is widely used in the field of medical radiation shielding sensitive to the magnetic environment.

new medical X-ray protection material: W-Ni-Cu alloy picture

W-Ni-Cu alloy refers to an alloy composed of a small amount of nickel, copper and other alloying elements based on tungsten. Some researchers have evaluated the radiation shielding effects of some tungsten alloys such as W-Ni-Cu alloy using 133Ba (356 keV) and 137Cs (660 keV) γ-ray sources. And lead is evaluated at the same conditions. The results showed that tungsten alloys have better radiation protection effect than the commonly used lead. In a word, W-Ni-Cu alloy is a welcomed new medical X-ray protection material for medical applications.
