Hydrogen Tungsten Bronze

Hydrogen tungsten bronze (HxWO3, 0≤x≤1) may be used as a co-catalyst in combination with platinum, thereby reducing the usage amount of platinum (The cost of platinum is high) and increasing the catalytic activity of platinum.

Hydrogen tungsten bronze combines with the adsorbed hydrogen which has not been completely dissociated on platinum surface, thus increasing the rate of hydrogen oxidation reaction. At the same time, HxWO3 has the ability to provide protons after accepting a large number of protons. These protons through the electrolyte membrane to the cathode and combine oxygen to produce the final product – water. So, the energy efficiency of the fuel cell is also improved.PEMFC picture
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) have the advantages of low reaction temperature, large energy density, high efficiency, and non-pollution, making them widely applied in portable power supplies, power supplies and power stations.

HxWO3 is a non-stoichiometry compound with a six-, five-, or four- channel with a special space tunnel structure. This structure facilitates the deintercalation and exchange of ions, giving them the ability to provide and accept protons. In the presence of hydrogen tungsten bronze, the following reactions occur:
xPtH + HyWO3 = HzWO3 + xPt (0<x, y, z≤1, z=x+y)
HzWO3 = HvWO3 + wH+ + we- (0<v, w, z≤1, z=v+w)
