Fundamentally, nearly half of the energy available on the earth's surface is composed of sunlight that is near-infrared rays, i.e., greater than 780 nm. And how to shield NIR light (heat radiation) has been an important topic for scientists. And the NIR-absorbing materials have attracted much attention. Tungsten trioxide is one of many NIR-absorbing materials that has been studied to be used in preparation of nano heat insulating film. And such a heat shielding film has been found to be useful in smart windows. Other than photoabsorption properties, tungsten trioxide materials with large band gaps have attracted a lot of research interest due to their potential uses in optical recording devices, field-emission applications and high-Tc superconductors.
