Tungsten Alloy Radiation Source Container

Tungsten alloy radiation source container is the best radiation shielding container in nuclear medicine as tungsten alloy - the new kind of radiation shielding material - has the characteristics of high density (17.0-18.5 g/cm3), good machinability, good mechanical properties, high modulus of elasticity, high absorption capacity against X-ray and γ-ray. Also, unlike toxic lead container, tungsten alloy container is harmless to human health and environment.

Tungsten alloy radiation source container is also called tungsten heavy alloy radiation source container with the composition of W-Ni-Fe or W-Ni-Cu. It has been recorded that tungsten alloy contains 80%-98% W along with small amounts of Ni, Fe, and Cu elements. Tungsten is alloyed with other metals by going through the compacting and sintering process. High density tungsten alloy is sintered by powder metallurgy for 60-90 min at working temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1525 °C. The sintering temperatures and atmospheres are critical factors for certain expected engineering properties, such as high tensile strength and elongation.
